Imagine spending your working days literally improving lives. In the careers profession, that’s the work that we do. In fact, it’s not really work, it’s a way of life. And whether you’re just curious about the hundreds of roles in careers, ready to leap right in, or are already in the sector but looking to move around it or find a like-minded community, this website is packed full of useful information.
The Careers Sector is full of passionate people who really care about the work they do. Unlike what you might think, it’s also not just school Careers Advisers. We have people working in digital roles, creating content, helping people in organisations work out their best lives, or supporting them when they feel the opposite as they face redundancy.
There are also huge links and cross over with other sectors like HR/L&D, Recruitment and even organisations working in politics, social justice and wellbeing.
Ok we’ll be honest, parts of the sector are not very diverse. And many within it are retiring. We need people from all works of life, whatever their culture, background or age. We’d love to see more people who are new to the world of work themselves come into the sector as well as people transferring over from other sectors.
There are so many different roles, requiring all sorts of abilities, qualifications and skillsets, that there is a place for everyone. And why do we need this? Because the clients themselves are varied individuals with their own stories to tell and they need a diverse group to help them.
We are a professional sector, and with that comes a requirement for a standard approach. Parts of the sector, particularly around coaching with adults, are less regulated but we’re part of the many individuals and organisations trying to change that.
There are lots of qualifications available to study in a variety of ways and that’s one of the things that makes the sector so great! We also have things like a code of ethics to follow, frameworks and a great community who you can always ask questions. We don’t know of any other sector that has such supportive colleagues.
